We work with several major international ship owners, ship builders and operators. The company is solely focused on design and manufacture of products for commercial clients and welcomes approaches from distributors, volume boat builders and commercial operators or shipyards.
Equipment and facilities
Ecomar have a 5500ft fabrication facility and a range of resources in-house, including fully provisioned workshops with 1MWh batteries and its own fleet of boats and IT.

Eugene Bari
Chief Executive Officer
Prof Eugene Bari is a serial entrepreneur who has worked in the powered marine sector for over thirty years. He is a graduate of Leeds University and City University Business School and is an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Decarbonisation at Exeter University. Prof Bari is author of 11 current patents and is a vocal advocate for clean energy.
Eugene started his first business aged 19 and since then has built a number of enterprises in marine, construction and media. Currently he is CEO of Ecomar Propulsion and Chairman of Ecomar Systems.
Chris Smith
Independent Director
Prof Chris Smith is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Exeter. His research primarily focuses on mechanics and simulation, but has expanded to encompass simulation (and fabrication) of hybrid and electric powertrains. He is working with Ecomar Propulsion on a new generation of low cost reliable high power electric motors.
Emilio Binst Benvenuti
Finance Director
Emilio is an experienced strategy consultant and venture builder. He has worked in multiple sectors for the last 5 years, with over 200 innovative start-ups across the globe, helping them define a clear and actionable strategy for growth, raise funds, and build sustainable commercial models.
Malcolm Padwick
Senior Compliance Engineer
Malcolm has significant experience working on a range of innovations including for the UK and overseas armed forces. Malcolm was selected as a top-10 finalist of the Daily Telegraph STEM awards 2020. He is the company lead on Quality (ISO9001/14001), Marine Regulation compliance and IP applications.
Tara Bari
Finance/Admin/HR Manager
Tara has worked as a senior administrator in the marine industry for 15 years. Previously employed as Divisional administrator at Desty Marine and Sealine she is Level 4 Customs (post Brexit) qualified.
Angelito Barbierato
Senior Systems Integration Engineer
Angelito “Beppe” is a career Army senior engineer who leads on battery and hydrogen propulsion systems and all electrical control systems at Ecomar Propulsion. He has a deep technical knowledge of how each system interacts to give clean electrical power to vessel operators on demand. In addition to his technical skills, Angelito is a double gold medal winner at the Invictus games.
Craig Miller
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Craig has 10+ years experience as a mechanical design and development engineer. He has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Strathclyde and has previously worked with industry leading companies such as Trumpf Lasers and Delphi Diesel Systems, where he helped produce the next generation of fuel injection equipment for the heavy duty diesel market, gearing heavily towards emissions and cost reduction.
Ryan Astbury
Electrical Technician
Ryan has worked in the marine industry since 2019 where he spent 4 years completing his Marine Electrical Engineering apprenticeship. During this time, he gained experience refitting R.I.Bs for the MOD as well as a wide range of leisure craft.
Nicholas Lekkas
Chief Technical Officer
Nicholas is a highly skilled engineer. He graduated from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Nicholas has extensive expertise in designing complex hydrogen energy storage systems and integration technologies for marine and wider industry. Based in Edinburgh, Nicholas heads up the low flash point fuels projects across the Ecomar Propulsion portfolio.
Luke Perry
Business Development Manager
Luke graduated from the University of Warwick with a First Class Degree in Biological Sciences (Hons). After a period in industry working as a Laboratory Technician at the Rosalind Franklin Laboratory he graduated from the University of Plymouth with distinction and a Master’s Degree in Marine Conservation.
